So the story goes: a couple years ago, we went panning for gold in Northern California with friends-for-life Angie and Todd. They brought along some plastic vials to save some of the glittery silt. They had the brilliant idea to collect samples of soil from all of the cool places they travel to (and travel to cool places they do!). Being the nifty idea stealer that I am, I had to start my own collection. So far, I only have sand from the beach at Florida's Sanibel Island(pictured), but I'm planning to add to our collection when we go to Indiana in July, by snagging a bit of soil from the family farm.
Since we don't have friends with hospital lab connections I had to find my own vials. They were pretty cheap here. (I think mine are VC4)

I must give credit where credit is due. We got the idea from our old bishop's wife in California. They had the vials all over their house. It was so cool.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the website to buy good looking vials! I had all but stopped the project because a) we're almost out of vials, and b) the ones we do have have ugly dark orange lids - doesn't quite fit with the decor. The black lids make the vials oh, so appealing. I will definitely be buying some!
You're welcome! Joe is in Washington D.C. for a business trip this week and, bless his patient heart, agreed to bring a little soil home for me. Now I'm going to have a collection bigger than one, I'll have to find some cute, tiny labels...
